Permit to Work

WELDING, CUTTING AND OTHER HOT WORK

Prior to any hot work being undertaken the following conditions are to be in place:

- All spaces adjacent to where the work is to be undertaken are to be checked in order to ensure that the heat generated will not cause secondary ignition. This will include the general tidying up of the area in order to ensure that there are no combustible materials.

-An appropriate fire-fighting extinguisher must be in place adjacent to where the hot work is being undertaken for emergency use.

-Any persons involved in undertaking hot work should wear personal protective equipment (eye protection, gloves, correct footwear etc.)

- Any hoses and leads connected to cylinders or used during the operation should be, as far as possible kept free of stairways and other points of access in order to reduce the risk of pinching, tripping and falling.

-Keep any full gas bottles, not being used, away from the work currently being undertaken by at least 15 metres.

- If work is being undertaken in confined spaces, forced ventilation, the use of fume extractors and emergency breathing apparatus will be required. In addition a safety harness is to be worn and a person is to be placed on stand-by.

- A risk assessment of the area and work to be undertaken is to be made by the contractor/crew member before any work is undertaken.
