Saltash
Welcome To Saltash
Saltash, although not a harbour in its own right has a significant number of maritime assets including a listed quay, pier with landing stage, slipways, moorings, pontoon and walkway, dinghy racks and a boat park.
History
Saltash has history of small fishing boats, ferry crossings goods and people across the Tamar river, there were three wharves north of Brunel’s bridge, New Wharf, Commercial Wharf and Ashtor Wharf as well as Clatworthy’s Quay, a pontoon and two slips. Commercial Wharf was used by the Saltash, Three Towns & District Steamboat Company Limited’ for maintenance and the fitting out of its boats.
With river-based industry in decline; the local boat yard closed, and the steamboat yard was taken over by the gas company. The once busy ferry had lost some of its trade to Torpoint and the much-improved train service.
